Vehicle Story

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is a two-owner, award-winning, body-off restored sports coupe powered by a replacement LS6 454ci V8 paired with a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission. A professional restoration was completed in 2011, which incorporated performance upgrades, a newly-reupholstered interior, and new BFGoodrich tires. Finished in Cranberry Red with dual black stripes over a two-tone vinyl interior, this Chevelle SS is now offered with the car’s original matching-numbers 396ci engine, a build sheet, an owner’s manual, and a clear Washington title in the seller’s name.

As part of the 2011 restoration, the body was refinished in Cranberry Red with dual black stripes on the cowl-induction hood and the trunk. It features chrome bumpers, headlight surrounds, window trim, and emblems. The seller reports that the body and paintwork were scrutinized for a quality finish and fitment, and the car has always been stored in a climate-controlled garage. In addition, per the seller, the car is a multi-award winner at local shows.

Factory 14” steel Rallye wheels with SS-branded center caps and chrome trim rings are wrapped in 225/70 BF Goodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires with approximately 4,500 miles.

The interior is trimmed in reupholstered black vinyl with matching door panels, dash, and carpet, and embroidered SS 454 floor mats. A center console with stainless-steel accents and an integrated armrest is mounted between the seats, and the shift lever is topped by a cue-ball knob. The trunk is lined with a vinyl mat and contains a spare tire and associated jack equipment.

Instrumentation is framed by a 3-spoke steering wheel with a bowtie horn emblem and consists of a 120-mph speedometer, a 7k tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and voltage. The 5-digit mechanical odometer shows approximately 28k miles, though true chassis mileage is not known.

The replacement Turbo Jet 454ci LS6 V8 has seen 4,500 miles since the restoration and has been dyno-tested to produce 460 horsepower to the crank. The seller states that it is mechanically sorted and running well, and receives oil and filter changes both prior to and after winter storage. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a Muncie 4-speed manual transmission.

Additional photos showing the condition of the underside are available in the gallery.

The sale includes the car’s original matching-numbers 396ci engine and transmission, as well as a build sheet, documentation, and an owner’s manual.
