Vehicle Story

This 1938 Chevrolet half-ton pickup was the product of an older restoration and is described as a running, driving, and highly original example with a 216ci inline-six paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. This pickup has been with the same family for three generations and represents a well-optioned survivor configured with extensive brightwork, cab lights, a spotlight, wide whitewall tires, and replacement bed planks. Finished in two-tone red with black running boards over a reupholstered black vinyl interior, this pickup is now offered with a clear North Dakota title in the seller’s name.

The Chevrolet Master series of trucks and medium-duty vehicles shared an appearance with coupes and sedans of the same era, with a production lifespan dating back to 1918 with the Series 490. This example from 1938 is painted two-tone red with black running boards and features brightwork for the bumpers, grille, moldings, and other exterior trim. Equipment includes cab lights, a driver-side spotlight, a tow receiver. The interior of the cargo bed has replacement wood panels and hardware, and there are wooden bed caps mounted atop either side. The driver-side roll-up window is cracked, and the seller has provided detailed photography in the gallery showing wear and tear on exterior finishes.

Black-finished steel wheels with bowtie-branded bright caps are wrapped in wide whitewall tires. The braking system is a fully restored mechanical hydraulic setup, and steering is unassisted. One wheel cap is missing at the front passenger side, and the seller notes his father would like to keep the wooden bed signs unless the buyer must have them as part of the sale.

The interior is fitted with black vinyl split-bench seating and a two-tone cabin theme, with the dash being finished in red and black to correspond with the exterior. Aftermarket bowtie-branded floor mats are installed in the footwells. Photos do show some small tears in the upholstery and general wear within the cabin.

Instrumentation includes a 100-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and oil pressure. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 23k miles, though true chassis mileage is unknown.

A butterfly hood opens to reveal the single-carbureted 216ci inline-six. Power is directed to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel. A driving video is available for viewing below.

@GairdnerB – seller. did u rec my questions so i can make another bid ???? ...

Hello GairdnerB: This pickup originally belonged to my grandfather, who restored the vehicle himself. Since the pickup was my grandfather's, I do not have any documents on the work that was done. The vehicle's engine is original but has been rebuilt. The transmission has NOT been rebuilt, but it is original as well. The '38 Chevy pickup does have hydraulic brakes and yes, both the water pump & clutch have been restored by my grandfather. I'm not certain about specifics, but as you see in the video, the pickup runs great. The starter was either rebuilt or replaced, and the pickup starts up easily every time we take it out of storage to drive. Most of the gauges work, but I'm not certain about the speedometer. Vehicle has new tires with low mileage and there's also a Spare Tire included (sits underneath the truck box-see pics). Vehicle will need a new battery. Regarding the Rear-end gear ratio and leafs' size, I do not know off-hand, but they are original. Hope this answers your questions. If not, please let me know and I'll do my best to respond back to you.
