Vehicle Story

This 1985 Jaguar XJS has accrued 73,800 miles since new and is powered by a High Efficiency (HE) 5.3-liter V12 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. The seller has owned the vehicle for 16 years and treated it to a $4,000 mechanical service in August 2020. Equipment includes automatic climate control, burled elm woodgrain trim, and fog lamps. Finished in Tudor White over a red leather interior, this XJS is now offered with a CARFAX report, service records, and a clear Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

The XJS grand tourer had a production span between 1975 to 1996 over three distinct iterations and featured prominent rear flying buttresses. A 1981 refresh brought about changes to the drivetrain, and this example from 1985 is painted Tan over an original rust-free body. Exterior equipment includes front fog lamps, a lower air dam, and High Efficiency badging at the rear. Brightwork is present for the bumper trim, headlight bezels, sideview mirror caps, window surrounds, door handles, and dual polished exhaust outlets at the rear.

Five-spoke 15” alloy wheels are wrapped in tires with good tread life remaining.

The interior is fitted with red leather bucket seat upholstery and matching door panels, center console, and carpeting. The seller notes that the driver seat has a small blemish on the back portion. The cabin is accented in burled elm woodgrain across the face of the dash and the upper portions of the door panels, and amenities include cruise control and air conditioning with automatic climate control. A replacement AM/FM/CD head unit has been added, but the original radio is included with the sale. A full-size spare Pirelli tire is stored in the carpeted trunk.

Instrumentation is provided by a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer, along with accompanying gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The six-digit mechanical odometer reads 73,800 miles, which the seller states are an actual reading. The seller adds that the trip meter does not work.

The High-Efficiency 5.3-liter V12 was rated at 291 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque and is reported to be free of leaks at this time. Service was performed and an inspection performed by an independent service facility with $4,000 in receipts dated August 2020. The belts and water pump were changed in 2017. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a 3-speed automatic transmission and a console-mounted shift lever.

Additional undercarriage photos can be found in the gallery.

The sale includes service records and the car’s factory radio.

Since you have owned for 16 years…what can you tell me about the regular maintenance cost of the 1985 XJS? Many believe it is very costly to repair these vehicles? Do you have any objective observations? Thanks Rob from Salem MA.
