This 1964 Ford Thunderbird is a rust-free California hardtop with refurbished finishes both inside and out, and powered by a 390ci V8 mated to a rebuilt Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. Accompanied by brightwork that is reported to be in good condition, this Thunderbird rides on newer tires over chrome wheels and has recently received a replacement swing-away steering column, plus all-new suspension components, spark plugs and wires, steering gearbox, and more. Finished in Raven Black over a black vinyl interior, this fourth-generation Thunderbird is now offered with a clear California title in the seller’s name.
The Thunderbird received some styling changes in 1964 and was offered in hardtop, convertible, and Landau versions. This Thunderbird hardtop was reportedly resprayed in Raven Black (A) and features quad headlights with surrounding exterior brightwork for the grille, bumpers, polished dual exhaust outlets, and more. The paint is described as presentable although not show-quality.
Replacement 15” five-spoke chrome wheels are mounted to newer Cooper Cobra tires per the seller, and documentation shows the suspension has been rebuilt with new front coils, rear leaf springs, strut rod bushing kit, and more. Steering has been upgraded to a Red Head gearbox, new front left and rear right drum brake wheel cylinders were installed, and an alignment was performed.
The interior houses black vinyl bucket seat upholstery that is reported to be in good condition and is color-matched to the rest of the interior. The dash exhibits some age-related cracking and is covered by an aftermarket mat, but other interior materials are described as being in good condition. Convenience amenities include carpeted floor mats, a four-way adjustable driver seat, a center console with stainless-steel accents, a radio, and an analog clock. The seller notes that the rear window and the gauges require some electrical work.
The driver side features a replacement swing-away steering wheel which frames a horizontal 120-mph speedometer and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads approximately 75k miles, though true mileage is unknown.
The Z-code 390ci V8 was factory rated at 300 horsepower when new, and this example is dressed with chrome valve covers and a Ford High-Performance air cleaner. Recent work consisted of new spark plugs and wires, driver-side valve cover gasket, exhaust manifold gasket and bolt, Power is directed to the rear wheels through a rebuilt Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission with a console-mounted shift lever.
