Vehicle Story

This 1968 Mercury Cougar is an XR-7 trim level example from the second model year of the first generation. Powered by a rebuilt 351ci Cleveland V8 mated to a 4-speed manual, the seller says fewer than 1,000 miles have been covered since work was performed, and also notes an older restoration, green metallic paint, replaced carpet, and a number of other items including chrome wheels and Cooper tires. This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is offered on a clear Illinois title in the seller's name.

The first-generation Mercury Cougar is based heavily on the contemporary Ford Mustang, but has its own body design. This example has a hood scoop similar to the design associated with the Dan Gurney XR7-G option package. The seller notes an older restoration, metallic green paint, and a lack of rust thanks to previous ownership in Texas. Aftermarket mag-style wheels house four-wheel disc brakes and are wrapped in Cooper Radial GT tires with raised white lettering.

This Cougar retains the correct "electric shaver" grille used on the first two years, with headlights that are hidden when not in use.

The cabin features bucket seats divided by a center console with a pair of cupholders and a padded armrest. The steering wheel is an aftermarket item with a wood rim. Green carpeting is described as new.

The instrument panel sits below a padded dash and wears faux wood trim. Toggle switches for lighting are situated in the middle above an older cassette deck. Instrumentation consists of a prominently mounted 6,000-rpm tachometer and 120-mph speedometer in addition to dials for fuel, coolant temperature, along with ammeter.  A factory oil pressure gauge is on the passenger side above the glovebox.

Beneath the hood sits a rebuilt 351 Cleveland V8 which is said to have been rebuilt with fewer than 1,000 miles covered since. The 351 Cleveland joined the model lineup in 1970 with a 4bbl carburetor and output of 300 horsepower. This Cougar runs a four-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted shifter. Other mechanical equipment includes four-wheel disc brakes.

This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is offered on a clear Illinois title in the seller's name.

@ForkintheRoad – @AngelM Where are the controls for the HVAC and/or how do they work? Must say the photos are of only average quality. Example: Photo of the warranty data plate on the driver's door where the preview is exactly the same size as the enlarged view...and almost everything is illegible. What sort of rear end gearing does the car have? Is it just me or is the "XR7" badge on the driver's side sail panel crooked? Not sure if that's just a stick-on or if it has pins through the body. Missing "Mercury" script emblem on leading edge of the driver's front fender. Looks like a lot of effort went into this beauty. She just needs a few more detail items to sharpen her up. ...

The controls for the AC are hidden under the dash , currently though the car is not equipped with AC

@ClassicStangFan – Looking at photo of rear area of driver side looks like possible minor pitting in the paint, is such the case. As another comment stated - why no responses to previous comments? ...

I think that may of been a light reflection, there isn't pitting. It has chip guard paint on the bottom section of the car.
