Vehicle Story

This 1979 GMC Jimmy High Sierra is finished in two-tone metallic root beer and white over a tan vinyl interior and is powered by a 350ci V8 paired to a 3-speed automatic transmission with four-wheel drive. With only 3 owners from new, it had not been registered from 1983 to 2018 and has been stored in a climate-controlled garage during the entire time. The seller acquired the vehicle approximately three years ago from the original owner's son and performed the necessary work to make it drivable. Currently the Jimmy has 54k original miles and is now offered with a clean Iowa title.

Finished in the factory two-tone scheme, the Jimmy retains its original metallic root beer over white paint. The grill features round headlights mounted in square buckets with polished accents across the grill. The rear section of the roof is removable, retaining rollover protection for the front passengers but still allowing for open-air driving, the seller states that the top has never been removed from the truck. Equipped with the High Sierra option package, the rear tailgate features a brushed stainless steel trim plate with a retractable rear window. Stainless upper and lower body moldings run the length of the truck complimented with polished wheel well trim and camper style side-view mirrors.  The windows were professionally tinted.

The truck retains the original 15" steel six-lug wheels fitted with 235/75-15 Bronco Radial ADP tires. Equipped with 4WD from the factory, the front wheels use an automatic locking hub setup. Polished trim rings are equipped on all four wheels with polished hub covers in the front, the rear features the factory center caps with "4X4" logo in the middle.

The interior is completely original and untouched per the seller. The seats are upholstered in tan vinyl with matching carpeting. As part of the High Sierra package, a center console with storage compartment and cupholders sits between the seats and the door panels feature power door locks, matte silver inserts with decorative trim around the manual window cranks. The front seats are equipped with a 3-point seatbelt with lap belts only for the rear passengers. A full-size spare tire with cover is mounted in the rear cargo area. The truck is equipped with air conditioning that has been converted to R134A refrigerant and a new Delco compressor and condenser.

A black 4-spoke steering wheel with a column-mounted shifter sits ahead of the gauge cluster with stainless steel-look trim plates.  Anchored by a 100-mph speedometer additional gauges include fuel, oil pressure, temperature, and voltage. The five-digit odometer shows 54k miles which are original per the seller, 200 of which have been added during their ownership. The two-tone dash features original climate controls and AM/FM radio with cassette deck mounted just to the right of the driver with an air vent on top. A stainless steel trim plate houses the air vents on the passenger side.

The original engine 350ci V8 was replaced with a new 300h.p. GM crate motor two years ago and paired with the vehicle’s original Turbo 350 three-speed automatic transmission. The four-wheel-drive system is actuated through a floor-mounted lever controlling the 3-speed transfer case. An Edelbrock carburetor and intake were added for improved performance, along with long tube Hooker headers and an aluminized dual exhaust.

The factory-style suspension remains intact with the stock shocks being replaced with Coilover units. Additional photos can be viewed in the gallery.

Prior to the seller acquiring the truck 3 years ago, it had been stored since 1983 in a climate-controlled garage but was not in running condition. All work has since been performed by the seller to make the truck roadworthy. Now offered for sale on a clean Iowa title, this Jimmy comes with all documentation from work performed and a copy of the original Tennesse title.
