Vehicle Story

This black on black 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS features a 396ci V8 engine The factory-rated 325 hp engine is paired with a floor shifted automatic transmission and a  12-bolt rear with a 3.31 gear.  The seller states that this Chevelle is one of 278 units produced with the optional V75 ‘Traction Compound Canisters’. It features vinyl front bucket seats, power steering, factory air conditioning and the power disc brakes were recently serviced. This Chevelle SS396 was produced at General Motors’ Baltimore, MD factory and is now offered for sale with a clean Illinois title.

Finished in black with a matching vinyl roof, this Chevelle features white side-striping across the length of the body, chrome front and rear bumpers, and SS emblems. The quad headlights have chrome bezels that complement the chrome grille that features an SS 396 badge. Exterior changes to the 1969 Chevelle were slight from the previous year but the most distinct update was the new grille that features straight horizontal bars, as opposed to the previous honeycomb style.

It rides on five-spoke SS wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with raised white lettering.

The black vinyl interior has front bucket seats with matching carpet, headliner, dashboard, and door inserts replete with SS 396 badging. A horseshoe shifter highlights the chrome trimmed console and the dashboard is equipped with an aftermarket AM/FM radio with a cassette player as well as factory air conditioning.

The dashboard houses a 120-mph speedometer and odometer with the fuel, engine temperature, oil pressure, and generator gauges in a neighboring cluster. The five-digit odometer indicates 91,642 miles.

Under the hood is a 396/325hp V8 engine with a block cast number ‘3955272’ and a cast date of ‘C-9-9’. The engine also has a ‘T0321JK’ engine stamp, and both cylinder heads are cast number ‘3931088’ with a cast date of ‘C-10-9’. It features a Rochester Q-Jet four barrel carburetor with an open element air cleaner and has been updated with an H.E.I ignition system. Headers with new cross-flow pipes sends the exhaust through twin mufflers. On the console a horseshoe shifter selects gears for the automatic transmission that has a partial VIN code of ‘CC’ on its case. A 12-bolt rear with 3.31 gears gets the horsepower to the pavement.

The suspension has front and rear sway bars and recent service was performed on the power disc brakes. Pictures of the vehicle’s underbody are available in the photo carousel to the right.

@Mjt1969 – Has this car gone through any type of restoration? Assuming there had to of been a re-spray at some point but the undercarriage doesn’t look like it’s been touched. Any additional info would be great. Thank you ...

Yes, the Chevelle just recently went through a frame up restoration. The owner didn’t want to do the undercarriage because he wanted to showcase the original floors and how solid the car is. The new owner will receive an extensive log of the entire restoration.
