Vehicle Story

This 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 RS two-door coupe is a largely-stock, three-owner muscle car that comes from long-term ownership and is powered by a correct, rebuilt 350ci LT1 V8 paired with a correct Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission. This second-generation F-body was originally delivered to Sunniday Chevrolet in Highland Park, Illinois and spent over three decades with its second owner. Equipment includes front and rear aero treatment, an F41 suspension package with recent replacement KYB shock absorbers, and a positraction rear end. Finished in Mulsanne Blue with black accent striping over a black vinyl interior, this Camaro is now offered with a build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, a window sticker, a pre-delivery service checklist, the spare wheel and jack, the uninstalled original AM radio and speakers, a summary from the prior owner documenting 32 years of history, the original safety belts, and a clear California title in the seller’s name.

The Camaro model debuted in 1967 on the General Motors F-body platform and underwent a full redesign three years later. The second generation carried forward a similar unibody structure, receiving a restyled body that was larger in all dimensions. This example from 1970 is equipped in Z/28 RS configuration, offering a rust-free and accident-free body that was refinished in 2015 in its original Mulsanne Blue (26) with black stripes and black vinyl trim. Rally Sport equipment (package Z22) was applied at the factory which include a special grill, black vinyl body trim, split-chrome bumpers, and hide-away windshield wipers. Additional body features include a chin spoiler, a blacked-out front grille, a high-rise hood, a rear deck spoiler, Z/28 badging, and a polished dual exhaust system. The car has been stored in a climate-controlled environment throughout the seller’s ownership, although minor paint bubbles are noted on the lower left rear fender under the bumper as shown in the photo carousel.

Aluminum five-spoke 15” wheels with gray-finished centers and polished trim rings are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A raised-white-letter tires with 10th week of 2019 date codes. This Camaro came factory-equipped with the option F41 performance suspension, comprised of unique front and rear springs, shock absorbers, and stabilizers along with a quick-ratio steering system. Recent mechanical refurbishment includes the installation of KYB shock absorbers on all corners, new brake pads and front brake lines, a replacement master cylinder, and traction bars added.

The interior was refurbished in 2014 using replacement components from Parts Unlimited Incorporated and is fitted with reupholstered black vinyl bucket seats, color-matched to the door panels, dash, center console, and carpeting. The front seats feature three-point seat belts mounted in the original mounting points and the original belts have been retained and will be included with the sale. Amenities include Soft Ray tinted glass, a modern audio system, a Hurst chrome shift ball. The original AM radio is uninstalled but included with the sale. The seller notes that the analog clock is inoperative and there is patina on the inner rear trunk floor but no evidence of rust-through.

Instrumentation sits behind a two-spoke RS-branded steering wheel and includes a 150-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and readouts for coolant temperature, voltage, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 54k miles, although true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

The rebuilt 350ci LT1 four-barrel V8 was part of the Z/28 Special Performance package and was factory rated at 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. While some of the engine numbers were milled off during the rebuild, the partial suffix “CTB” remains which designates this as the correct powerplant for the vehicle. The cylinder heads are not original to the car but are correct Chevrolet 186 2.02 “fuelie” heads per the seller. A replacement radiator has been added under current ownership, along with a newer distributor, and a 1973-spec radiator overflow. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a correct Muncie M22 4-speed manual transmission and a positraction 12-bolt 3.73 rear end. The seller has provided photographs of drivetrain components to validate authenticity.

Photos showing the underside are available in the carousel.

The sale includes a build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, a factory pre-delivery checklist, the spare tire and jack, the original safety belts, the uninstalled AM radio and speakers, and a window sticker showing an original MSRP of $4,381.95 including options. The car was subject to a California safety inspection within the last 30 days and 50 miles. Decoding the Fisher data tag provides the following information:

@Donruby – Do you still possess the original hood? ...

We do not have the original hood. When the previous owner bought the car in the 80's the replacement hood was already installed. The original owner told him he was toying with an aftermarket air cleaner with a longer stud.... closed the hood and you know the rest of the story. The replacement high-rise hood cleared the longer air cleaner stud and back then, unfortunately he didn't see the need to save the original.
