Vehicle Story

This 1959 Porsche 718 RSK roadster is a racecar replica that was produced by Thunder Ranch set up on a space frame chassis, developing power from a rebuilt 1,498cc flat-four paired with a 4-speed manual transaxle. Coil spring underpinnings provide balance and composure while the interior offers vinyl upholstery in the cockpit for two. Finished in Burgundy Metallic over a tan vinyl interior, this replica is now offered with service records, an extra set of wheels, and a clear Alabama registration in the seller’s name.

Launching in 1958 in Formula races in Europe, the original Porsche RSK was designated as purely a racecar, drawing its name from a combination of Rennsport and K, the K being a descriptor for the front suspension configuration. Thunder Ranch in El Cajon, California, now known as Rock West Racing, produced the framework for a street-legal replica of the racecar by adapting a TR 550 frame, powder coating it, and then adding a blended polyester body to the frame with adhesive and rivets. This custom-built example rides on a space frame chassis and is painted Burgundy Metallic, accented by gold-finished Porsche logos and displaying covered headlamps, quad taillights, and a single-outlet exhaust.

Chrome-finished racecar wheels are currently mounted on this replica, and the sale includes an extra set of wire wheels. The suspension setup consists of a watt linkage and coil springs.

The interior is fitted with tan vinyl bucket seating for two, contrasted by brown piping.

Instrumentation includes a speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The odometer reads 2,475 miles, which reflects mileage driven since completion of the build.

The rear-mounted 1,498cc Volkswagen flat-four was completely rebuilt in early 2021 according to the seller. Power is directed via a 4-speed manual transaxle.

Additional underside photos can be seen in the gallery

The sale includes service records as well as an additional set of wire wheels.

@StevenB – Has it ever been street licensed by you? As the title has never transferred I would assume not? ...

That seems like an odd reply to has it ever been street licensed by you. I am happy to bid on it I just want to know I am legally allowed to drive it if I do. Can you please answer the question and then I can look up the rules in your state and see how they apply to where I live-

Additional Information : I purchased the car in the Spring of 2019. I immediately took it to a car shop in Pelham, Alabama (Retired Rides ) for minor adjustments:( installed a rear view mirrow , tightened the shifter cable, install new gages ( speedometer was broken ) , tuned up the carburetors. A month later I took it to Foreign Motor Cars ( in Pension ,Alabama ) and had the engine totally rebuilt. The car now runs and performs great. The car is titled over to my name, but was never registered at the DMV by me. That title shows more than 11,000 miles. The new title will reflect the new speedometer with the 2450 miles that I have put on the car since the speedometer was replaced.. My local DMV said that a bill of sale and the title to you, is all that is necessary for the transfer of ownership.

@Arffbubba – Seller, sure sorry about non-performing bidder. Have had that happen to me a few years back. Arghhh. Guessing passenger used windshield to climb down into car and cracked it. Any ideas on sourcing a replacement? Also have a question of gearing for freeway speeds. What would engine rpms be at 75mph? Thanks! ...

No. the crack in windshield was from a rock thrown on the highway. I am looking for a replacement, but it us a unique size. I have no idea on the rpms.
